BELOW THE SURFACE : Tunnel tour

BELOW THE SURFACE is a unique urban adventure with strong historical and environmental significance.
You will be exploring aspects of Cape Town that relate to the focal point of the social life for the first 200 years of the European occupation.

This experience was born from a team build exercise and has grown since into an holistic experience. This tunnel is steeped in South Africa’s earliest history and legend, and has a strong adventure element too. This is exploration of what was once an open river flowing down the slopes of Table Mountain to the ocean, feeding the early Van Riebeeck settlement.

We will meet at the Castle and take you to the entrance from here. At the entrance we will descend into the depths of the city’s underground passageways and explore the historic that was once an open river running down the slopes of Table Mountain. The run-off from Platteklip and Silverstroom gorge converges at the foot of the mountain and was know in heyday as the 'Varsche rivier' which ran down the face of the mountain and discharged into the sea. This is the reason the settlers choose Cape Town as a refreshment station, and is now one of the oldest catchment tunnels in South Africa.

All patrons will enter the tunnel, through a cast-iron manhole at the foot of Table Mountain. Each issued with gumboots and a flashlight.

The tunnel is extremely clean and well ventilated. Natural lighting adds to the ambiance of the walk and the air is fresh. This experience makes for great photographs and memories.

A medium level of physical exertion will be required. Those capable of climbing 3 flights of stairs, unassisted, poses the physical capability to complete this exercise. Should you suffer from sever claustrophobia, high blood pressure and weak joints (hips, legs, ankles) you will need to consult our team.

The minimum number of patrons per tour required is 10. You can either join an existing group or book your own group on a tour. The largest group we we have accommodated to date is 80 persons from the Cape Town Natural History Club and this was done comfortably.

We do not recommend children under 7 and offer a half price discount for children under 12.

CLIENT:Allan Gray Investment Services
GROUP: The Retail Finance Team
LOCATION: Cape Winelands

THE EXPERIENCE: Team Development & Bonding Experience

The day kicked off with teams having to strategise and plan the most optimum routes to their final destination. Their routes covered most of the Cape Winelands. Armed with event booklets, cryptic clues & maps, a good sense of adventure and much needed sense of humor, they set off! Teams had to tap into individual qualities and strengths to achieve team success! The strict cut-off times awarded some with penalties, and others with a great sense of achievement!
After a relaxing lunch during which there was much bragging about challenges overcome, it was time for their FINAL challenge. This involved teams lightly competing in a 4x4 challenge set up on the estate! Who knew William was an X-Naval Marine Recce driver!!!

Aside from spending quality time with colleagues in a stimulating and creative environment, teams had to identify and tap into individual strengths quite often overlooked! All-in-all a fantastic experience!
